Alder Hey Children's Hospital

A brand new £10m state of the art centre for research and education to help develop children’s medicine; housing around 100 staff the centre brings offices, laboratory space and research rooms plus a 105m2 lecture theatre. Built as part of Alder Hey’s evolving “Hospital in the Park”, the glass and timber building blends beautifully into the surrounding green spaces.

The feature timber clad walls and ceiling were a tremendous design challenge with acute detail to the margins and dimensions required to ensure that the end product looked homogenous and seamless.

  • Superstructure timber works
  • Feature bespoke Douglas-Fir wall, ceiling and stair cladding
  • Specialist acoustic wall panels
  • MDF mouldings
  • Domestic kitchen areas
  • External non-slip timber decking
  • Bespoke architectural performance doorsets – Acoustic & Fire rated
  • Architectural expert ironmongery
  • Temporary, structural & build-up works

Project challenges:

Factory finished doorsets, keeping damage to a minimum once installed

Fine router detailing to timber cladding, minimal margins to work to, needed maximum attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship

Complex and tight programme of trades attending site, each impacting on each other’s works in terms of tolerances, margins and timescales

Site access was restricted due to the hospital A&E being adjacent to the site so delivery timing and planning was imperative
